Sound Level Research

Threshold of hearing : The standard threshold is taken to be at 0dB but the measured human threshold of hearing is 1000Hz which is 4dB. The maximum sensitivity is around 3500 to 4000Hz. Threshold of Pain and Discomfort : Sounds above 90dB can cause hearing damage if someone is exposed to it every day. If the sound level is above 130dB it starts to hurt because 130dB is the threshold of pain. If it is above 110dB it surpassess the threshold or discomfort. hearing, H. (2019). Loudest Recorded Sound : The loudest recorded sound was recorded on the 27th of August 1883. It was created from a volcanic eruption from the islan...

Audio Analysis of Big Band/Swing Music

Glenn Miller - In The Mood; One of the instruments I heard throughout the songs I listened to were Brass instruments. They were some of the loudest instruments throughout the song. One of them being trumpets which were extremely loud and piercing throughout the songs. Another instrument I heard which was a lot more quiet than the brass and in the background of the song more was a piano which was barely noticeable. Another constant instrument which is fairly loud and clear which seemed to be to keep the rhythm was what I think is a open hi hat. Also the kick drum was quite quiet and hushed throughout the song but the tom's were being played louder and had more presence throughout the song when they were played every now and again. The last instrument in the songs that I could hear was a Bass guitar being played throughout the song. It sounded very deep and low and it was a lot quieter then a lot of the other instruments. There was no panning in Glenn Miller's -...

Balance & Panning Screenshots

Balance; I used these channel faders and moved them up and down to balance the instruments in the track out so I could hear all the instruments clearly and they all had an even amount of presence in the track. We were told that the highest the output could go was -6 decibels. This is to leave some headroom because if the output volume gets to or surpasses 0 decibels, the track then starts to clip. I used the faders to stop that from happening and also to lower the amplitude of the loudest instruments to balance them out. Panning; I used these panning knobs to pan move the audio of some of the instruments into one ear instead of both so I can hear the two individual guitars separately instead of both of them coming out of both headphones so you could hear both of them individually. I also did the same with the claps, the remix sounds and the shaker. This is so I can hear all the instruments and to add differentiation to the track making it more interesting and unique....
