Dynamic Mics

Image
A bit of information about Dynamic mics; All dynamic mics have a limited Bandwidth/Frequency Range. The Frequency Response in dynamic mics is known as the contour. It is used to makeup any deficiency in the frequency range. This basically means that it will boost or try to boost any of the lower signals within that frequency Range. This varies on the range of the dynamic mic in question as they all have slightly different frequency ranges. The Polar Pattern is the direction in which the mic picks up the signal. All Dynamic mics are Cardioid or "heart-shaped" in their polar pattern. They are good at picking up signals at the front of the mic but have a bad rear rejection which means they can't pick up signals from the back of the mic that well and they can pick up a bit of signal from the sides of the mic as they have a slight rear rejection. They are suitable for close miking as they can pick up close signals really well due to their polar pattern. The further aw...

Types of Synthesizers and Oscillators

There are 4 commonly used synthesizer waveforms within oscillators; Sine waves, Triangle waves, Sawtooth waves and Square waves also known as Pulse waves. There is a 5th waveform which is known as Noise waves but it is not used as much as the other 4. Sine waves are the pure tone of a single frequency and is also known as the fundamental waveform. The other waves have added harmonics and overtones differentiating them from the fundamental waveform which has no harmonics. Sawtooth waves have harmonics every integer above the fundamental waveform and every right harmonic decreases in half in volume/amplitude which makes the second part of the sawtooth wave shape. Both Triangle and Pulse waves have the same harmonics but they decrease in amplitude differently.  In a Square/Pulse wave the harmonics are a third as low in amplitude but the Triangle waves are a tenth as low. For example if both of these were waves at 100Hz their harmonics would increase to 300Hz, 500Hz etc. Going up b...

What A Compressor Is And What It Does

What is a Compressor ? A compressor can either be a software or hard What Is Compression ? Compression is the procedure of shortening the dynamic range between the louder and quieter parts of a sound or signal. This is by increasing the quieter sounds/signals and decreasing the louder sounds/signals.

Sound Level Research

Threshold of hearing : The standard threshold is taken to be at 0dB but the measured human threshold of hearing is 1000Hz which is 4dB. The maximum sensitivity is around 3500 to 4000Hz. Threshold of Pain and Discomfort : Sounds above 90dB can cause hearing damage if someone is exposed to it every day. If the sound level is above 130dB it starts to hurt because 130dB is the threshold of pain. If it is above 110dB it surpassess the threshold or discomfort. hearing, H. (2019). Loudest Recorded Sound : The loudest recorded sound was recorded on the 27th of August 1883. It was created from a volcanic eruption from the islan...

Audio Analysis of Big Band/Swing Music

Glenn Miller - In The Mood; One of the instruments I heard throughout the songs I listened to were Brass instruments. They were some of the loudest instruments throughout the song. One of them being trumpets which were extremely loud and piercing throughout the songs. Another instrument I heard which was a lot more quiet than the brass and in the background of the song more was a piano which was barely noticeable. Another constant instrument which is fairly loud and clear which seemed to be to keep the rhythm was what I think is a open hi hat. Also the kick drum was quite quiet and hushed throughout the song but the tom's were being played louder and had more presence throughout the song when they were played every now and again. The last instrument in the songs that I could hear was a Bass guitar being played throughout the song. It sounded very deep and low and it was a lot quieter then a lot of the other instruments. There was no panning in Glenn Miller's -...

Balance & Panning Screenshots

Image
Balance; I used these channel faders and moved them up and down to balance the instruments in the track out so I could hear all the instruments clearly and they all had an even amount of presence in the track. We were told that the highest the output could go was -6 decibels. This is to leave some headroom because if the output volume gets to or surpasses 0 decibels, the track then starts to clip. I used the faders to stop that from happening and also to lower the amplitude of the loudest instruments to balance them out. Panning; I used these panning knobs to pan move the audio of some of the instruments into one ear instead of both so I can hear the two individual guitars separately instead of both of them coming out of both headphones so you could hear both of them individually. I also did the same with the claps, the remix sounds and the shaker. This is so I can hear all the instruments and to add differentiation to the track making it more interesting and unique....
